Jan Łyp My View of the City

I was born in Kosztowce in 1934 into a family with a strong mining tradition that goes back generations. But I made a breakaway, though, and went to a secondary teacher training school. After graduation in 1953, I was ordered to take up a teaching position the Vocational School of Metallurgy in Świętochłowice. Then I was drafted to do two years’ mandatory military service. When I left the army in 1956, I took up studies at the Teacher Training College in Katowice. At the same time, in 1957, I joined Primary School No. 3 in Housing Estate A to teach drawing and handicrafts. There were no roadways or pavements – only mud all around. You had to wear wellington boots, and those had to be washed and changed each time before classes. My wife and I lived in the school building for a year. We just used the reading room. I didn’t get a flat in the newly built houses because some big shot with a party backing came along, and he got it. But in the autumn of 1958 the school inspector said: “You’re going get a flat. Don’t worry! You’re a family of teachers, you’re going to have children, so you need a decent flat. And finally we got it! In the first block housing estate C3 – the kind built against a deposit. It was already a prefabricated block. At 70 sqm, it was a large, luxury flat, at least for Tychy standards at the time. There was a bathroom, but no tiles – such indulgences were out of the question in those days – only bare walls, painted and varnished. We had very interesting neighbours. Our block was inhabited by the builders of the Goczałkowice Dam, teachers’ families, commanding officer of local police, artist Jan Nowak, and a number of architects, including Zbigniew Weber. It was mainly educated people and those holding positions of responsibility that were brought in this block of flats. Then they built two more blocks like ours to create a series of identical buildings along the railway trench. There was initially an embankment of earth from that trench in the place of today’s courtyards and garages. When they removed it, a walking alley was built - from Bielska Avenue, along the railway line, to the ice rink. The Tychy Miasto train station was later built on this route. Nearby, according to the plan of the main designers - the Wejchert couple, the central railway station was to be built. But despite their authority, they were sometimes unable to do very much - the funding was limited and many things were being put on hold. I know, because my daughter worked in Miastoprojekt. Next to our block there was also the very nicely located Primary School No. 11, where my wife and I worked.

As I said, one of our neighbours was Zbigniew Weber, the designer of St. John the Baptist’s Church. His design indeed caused dismay among the authorities. As for me, it was nothing short of stunning. I saw the structure and instantly took to it… I liked it because of its modernist, cubist form. And the figure of Christ in the interior… like the one in the Vence Chapel. This church was originally smaller. It was later enclosed by surrounding buildings – originally it was visible from Bielska Avenue. It often happened that tourist driving past it in buses, would make an unplanned stopover to visit the church. An exemplary socialist city had such a church! It aroused such interest that even children painted it during my art lessons.

In the 1960s, in addition to teaching in several primary and secondary schools in Tychy, I would work on various exhibitions, e.g. related to official anniversary celebrations. We did them in the lobby of the Andromeda cinema and in the Scout’s Hall, i.e. today’s Municipal Culture Centre. In 1971-1976, I studied at the Teacher Training College in Kraków. In March 1975, while still a student, I was promoted to the position of Deputy School Inspector for Culture, sport and tourism in Tychy, and six months, I was transferred to a new position to serve as Independent Head of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Department. This was also a time of peak activity for the Teatr Mały theatre, as this was its name, although formally it was the Culture Centre of the FSM Compact Car Company. Although it was designed primarily for theatre performances, we also hosted operettas and the Philharmonic Orchestra, which, due to space constraints, had to perform with a reduced ensemble, but they did come several times. And the auditorium was packed. We also brought many popular artists, such as Irena Santor, Irena Jarocka and Wioletta Villas. The demand among young people was often so great that instead of two shows we did three – at 4 p.m., 6 p.m., and a late evening one. I also collaborated intensely with other culture centres, e.g. the one in Housing Estate A. They had a very good dance company called Tychy. In the 1970s, the Cooperative Culture Centre ‘Tęcza’ was also launched in Housing Estate D, where comedy shows and exhibitions were organised. There were also other cultural venues, such as the Klub Budowlanych [Building Industry Club] located in the office building in today’s Grota Roweckiego Street. However, this one was pitched mainly at the architect community. There was also a club operating as part of the Polish Federation of Engineering Associations (Naczelna Organizacja Techniczna) in today’s Edukacji Street.

As Head of the Culture Department, I took part in organising all major events in the city, and especially the Youth Encounters. Many popular music acts, such as Perfect, Kombi, Budka Suflera or Skaldowie, came to give concerts at the former city stadium. Sometimes it was really scary to bring them there, because the kids would throw themselves onto their vans, although appropriate security measures and services were in place, of course. My first interest was to please the young people, especially since I had an adolescent daughter. I knew what they wanted – she would go ‘Dad, can we have this or that band?’ And it all worked out.

I was also involved in trying to bring together the local art community. I worked with such artists as Franciszek Wyleżuch, Eryk Pudełko, Fryderyk Kubica, Augustyn Dyrda and Stanisław Mazuś, who often took on themes that were important for the city. Besides, together with the then Vice-President Norbert Janik, we made efforts to establish a museum in Tychy. I proposed the palace in Bielska Avenue for this purpose, but the idea failed to go beyond the conservation survey stage.

The atmosphere in the office became unbearable in the early 1980s, so I went to the president and handed in my resignation. I went back to teaching and then I retired, though I still lectured at teacher training schools and led art workshops at the Youth Culture Centre No. 1 until 2002.

No i zabrał. Ale jesienią 1958 roku inspektor szkolny powiedział: „Dostaniecie mieszkanie. Nie martwcie się – jesteście rodziną nauczycielską, będziecie mieli dzieci, to musicie mieć porządne mieszkanie”. I dostaliśmy. W naszym bloku mieszkali budowniczowie zapory w Goczałkowicach, rodziny nauczycielskie, komendant milicji, artysta plastyk Jan Nowak i architekci, m.in. Zbigniew Weber.

No i postać Chrystusa we wnętrzu… Jak w kaplicy Matisse’a w Vence. Ten kościół był pierwotnie mniejszy. Został też obudowany – dawniej widać go było z alei Bielskiej. Socjalistyczne Tychy, a tu taki kościół!

Ściągaliśmy również wielu popularnych wówczas artystów, m.in. Irenę Santor, Irenę Jarocką i Wiolettę Villas.

Mnie interesowało to, żeby zadowolić młodzież. Tym bardziej, że miałem dorastającą córkę. I ja to wszystko czułem. Ona mi mówiła – tata, jeszcze taki zespół, jeszcze taki… No i to wszystko się udawało.

Próbowałem też jakoś skupić mieszkających w Tychach artystów. Współpracowałem m.in. z Franciszkiem Wyleżuchem, Erykiem Pudełko, Fryderykiem Kubicą, Augustynem Dyrdą i Stanisławem Mazusiem.

Poszedłem więc do prezydenta i złożyłem rezygnację.
